What if I told you that there is a place containing all you need to feel at ease?
- A place available at all times and completely free. It is in fact right here, in the body. And while we are always with our bodies, our awareness is often stuck in a much different and often scary place- our heads. While the journey into our bodies and our hearts is not without difficulties unknown, it is my belief that it is worth the commitment both for ourselves, and for our planet.
- Acupuncture can help us begin this journey. Using the breath and the acupuncture needle as our guide we can begin to penetrate into the great mystery that is ourselves. One of my patients recently told me that he always considered himself an anxious person, but that now he is not so sure that he was interpreting his feelings correctly. This profound insight inspired by thoughtful curiosity about his own inner feelings inspires me to dive deep into this terrain with my patients. Waking up to the reality of ourselves and our lives instead of getting stuck in patterns of painful disillusion can be done by touching the present moment with our hearts, instead of our heads.
Buddhist meditation teacher Jack Kornfield teaches that, “If we are our thoughts, then who is the one that’s listening to them?” Much of our suffering comes from believing that we are in fact our thoughts. But with the tools of mindful looking and listening we see that we are not. Rather we are pure consciousness looking back at itself. Recently, I began using herbal Taoist meditation teas to assist in the journey of discovering who we really are beneath our self-limiting thoughts. The teas are specifically formulated to assist us based on the nature of our concern. Whether what is bothering you is physical, emotional or both, it is my pleasure to explore the deeper meaning of our suffering, and to begin untangling the stories that we tell ourselves. If this work speaks to you, please consider giving me a call and seeing how I can be of service.
Can acupuncture help heart disease?
Acupuncture improves the health of people who have suffered severe heart failure, according to a study presented at the last American Heart Association meeting in Anaheim, California. According to this work, the action of the strategically placed needles significantly reduced the activity of the sympathetic nervous system among heart failure patients, according to the new study. The sympathetic nervous system is the one that regulates involuntary movements, such as heart beats and blood pressure.
The patients who were treated with traditional acupuncture – in contrast to another group who received a non-traditional type of acupuncture and a third group who did not receive acupuncture treatment – were found to have significantly reduced sympathetic nervous system activity, contributing to an overall improvement in their health status.
Can acupuncture help heart palpitations?
Acupuncture helps regulate the heartbeat and improves outcomes in patients taking medication. Researchers at Tianjin University of Chinese Medicine have demonstrated the effectiveness of combining acupuncture and herbal medicine with drugs. Adding Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapies increased positive results in 28% of patients suffering from tachycardia, arrhythmia and palpitations.
The heart is a muscle that beats non-stop from before birth until the last second of life, although it does not always beat at the same rhythm, it beats according to the need of oxygen needed by the body. When the heart’s rhythm accelerates due to a stimulus it is called tachycardia and when it beats irregularly it is called arrhythmia. Anyone can feel palpitations, but recurrent arrhythmias do require medical attention.
Can acupuncture lower heart rate/heart arrhythmia?
Arterial Hypertension (AH) is another chronic disease that can be treated with acupuncture, and although it cannot be definitively cured, there are a series of life habits that, together with the action of acupuncture, can substantially control it and thus avoid its consequences. Through acupuncture, blood volume can be reduced, heart frequency can be lowered by activating the parasympathetic system and the calibre of the vessels can be varied. All these methods allow intervention in factors that cause an increase in blood pressure. Acupuncture can lower blood pressure figures in people and help control hypertensive patients more efficiently and help lower the dose of medication needed and decrease side effects.
